Moving Tips

Moving with Pets

Before the Move

  • If you are moving to a rental, make sure you check with the landlord or agent to see if pets are allowed.
  • If you are allowed pets in your new home, make sure your pet will be happy in their new environment. A few things you will need to consider:
      • Will your pet have enough room to run and play
      • Will it be easy for them to escape, or injure themselves
      • Is there somewhere they can shield themselves from rain and the sun

Moving Day

  • Moving to a new environment can upset animals and cause them stress. On moving day, your pet can be upset by:
      • A lack of routine
      • Strangers (removalists, agent etc)
      • Changes to environment
  • Make sure you figure out how you are going to transport your pets to their new home. If you are travelling to your new home by car, it is best for cats to travel in a carrier, and make sure your dogs have harnesses for the trip.
  • Make sure you pack all your pets toys, water bowls and food together so that you know exactly where it is when you unpack
  • If you have fish, consult your nearest pet shop to find out the best way to move your fish, different species need to be transported in different ways

After the Move

  • Update micro chip details for your pets with your new address
  • Update your pet insurance
  • Find the nearest veterinarian and register your pet
  • Change the details on identity tags
  • Take dogs for a walk around the area
