Moving Interstate made easy
Moving interstate can be daunting for many people. At Moving Tracker, we want to make the move less overwhelming, so we have put together some tips to help the transition.
Before the Move
- Go through your possessions and sort out what you will be packing to take interstate. Throw out or sell anything that you don't intend on taking with you.
- If there are items you still want to keep but don't have the room for, organise storage options
- Figure out how you will be getting to your new home - fly or drive
- Decide if you will need to organise a hotel, you may not be able to move into your new home straight away
- Make sure you wash any dirty clothes before the move to reduce the amount of things to do once you reach your new home
- Empty, defrost and clean your fridge and freezer. Give away any food that cannot be taken with you.
- Consider getting cars serviced before the move
- Make sure you label boxes by room and clearly label what is in each box. This will make unpacking much easier.
On the Day
- Make sure all the bags you are taking with you are kept separate so that they are not confused and loaded into the moving truck
- Carry all important items with you such as passports, cash, and other important papers
- Turn off the gas at the meter and electricity at the switchboard
- Leave a note with your forwarding address for the new occupants
- After the moving truck is packed, do a final walkthrough to make sure everything has been packed
- Lock all windows and doors before leaving
After the Move
- Go for a walk around your new neighbourhood and familiarise yourself with the closest parks, schools and shopping centres
- Find out about any social or sporting clubs in your new neighbourhood. Join some clubs and meet people from around the area
- Make sure you unpack everything carefully and take note of any items that were damaged during transit for insurance purposes
- Get rid of empty boxes as soon as possible, call your council to find out pick up times for recyclables
