If you are moving into a property you have bought, make sure you check the contact to see if gas has been connected. If you are moving into a rental property, make sure you ask the agent if you will need to get gas connected.
No, in most circumstances you will not need to be home to get your gas connected as long as the technician has access to your gas meter on installation day.
Your gas meter is usually found outside the building, where the technician has easy access to read the meter. In rare cases, the gas meter can be found inside the building.
If your gas meter is inside the building, make sure you leave the gate open so that the technician has access to the meter.
If you are building a new home, make sure you install the gas meter somewhere the technician can view the reading from outside the building. Learn more about moving into a brand new home.
If you have a metric meter, simply read the numbers left to right.
If you have an imperial (dial) meter, simply read each dial, left to right. If the needle falls anywhere between two numbers, record the lowest number. For more information on how to read your gas meter, visit Lumo Energy.
It can take up to 7 days to get your gas connected if you are moving into an established home and up to 20 days if you are moving into a newly built home.
Do I need to be home to get my electricity connected?
No, you do not need to be home in order to have your electricity connected. All you need to do is make sure that the main switch is OFF and that the technician will have access to the meter on your installation day. If your electricity meter is not accessible from outside the building, you may need to be home for the installation, or leave a gate open for the technician to access the meter.
The location of your electricity main switch varies depending on your home. Some main switches are in the kitchen, garage, laundry, bedroom or main entrance. Make sure you ask the agent/previous owner where the main switch is before you move in.
If you have a digital meter, read the numbers left to right ignoring the final number.
If you have a dial meter, ignore the dials labelled 1/10 and 1/100 as these are check dials. Then read the rest of the dials left to right. If the needle falls between two numbers, always record the lowest number. In some cases, you will be able to submit meter readings to your supplier in order to get a more accurate bill.
It can take up to 7 days to get your electricity connected if you are moving into an established home and up to 20 days if you are moving into a newly built home.
If you have an existing phone connection and are just changing address, your phone will automatically be disconnected at your old home when it is connected at your new home.
If your new home has an existing phone connection, it should take between 3-5 working days to get your phone connected. If a phone line needs to be installed in your new home, it may take up to 2 weeks to get your new phone line installed.
It is best to test your phone line after 5pm on the date set for your connection. To do this, simply plug a phone in and listen for a dial tone. If you hear a dial tone, the phone line has been connected, if you do not hear a dial tone, there is still no connection.
No. In most cases, you will not need to be home. Many internet providers now provide self installation kits which also include instructions as to how to install your modem. The modem will usually be included in the internet package you purchase and will be sent to you via post.
If you prefer, a technician can come out to install the internet for you. They will bring the modem on installation day and you will have to be home to let them in your home.
In some cases, it can take up to 20 days to get your internet connected depending on whether you internet connection required a phone line. You will need to check with the internet supplier if your home is already connected and on their system.
If you are installing the internet yourself, you should receive a self installation kit from your supplier in the mail. Instructions will be provided in this kit.
If you have already installed your internet, you should have been provided connection instructions by your supplier. Make sure the modem is plugged in and that your computer is set up in the correct way. If you have any issues, you should call your supplier directly.
Yes, usually in the setup process, you will need to create a username and password for your internet. This is important if you want to keep your connection secure. If you are installing a wireless network, make sure you have set the correct privacy settings so that no one can use your internet.
There should be instructions included in your welcome pack once you have signed up to a particular supplier. Your provider will issue you a password so that you can create email addresses.
Yes. In most cases you will need to be home for the installation. If your home has previously been connected to Pay TV, the provider can send you a set top box which you can plug in and install yourself.
If your home has never been connected to pay TV, a technician will have to visit your home in order to install the cabling (and possibly satellite) required for you to receive Pay TV.
There are a couple of alternatives for you to think about if you want to get pay TV in more than one room. You can either purchase additional boxes for extra rooms, or you can purchase a signal splitter.
If you purchase additional set top boxes, there is usually an additional fee for the installation as well as a monthly ongoing fee. This option is best if you have a large home with multiple rooms. Additional boxes means that different channels can be watched on the separate TVs.
The cheaper option is to purchase a signal splitter which can split the signal from one TV to another. By using a signal splitter, the signal from one TV can also be seen on another TV. This option suits smaller homes with less people, as the additional TV will not have the ability to change the channel.
Think about what will suit you best before organising your connection.
No. You are only renting the set top box from your pay TV provider.
For some providers, you will need to arrange a disconnection, whilst others will disconnect automatically.
If you are changing electricity or gas provider, you will not need to notify your current supplier of your disconnection. This will happen automatically when you sign up to another company.
If you are transferring your account with your electricity or gas provider, you will need to notify them of your new address. Moving Tracker can do this for you, by simply filling out the Connect Me form.
With most companies, only the account holder can disconnect the service. In some cases such as Pay TV and internet, you will need to let your provider know that you want to disconnect. Keep in mind that there may be some disconnection fees involved depending on the agreement you have with your supplier.
When you decide to disconnect any services before you move, have a look at your agreement with the particular supplier. In some cases, you will not need to pay a disconnection fee. If you are still in contract, you will most likely need to pay a disconnection fee. This will vary with each supplier.
